Romance scams: how to spot them

Romance scams are one of the most devastating traps on the internet. While fraudsters still use fake profiles on dating platforms, a new variant is also developing: celebrity identity theft. Actors, singers, influencers... no famous personality is spared.

Behind these different scenarios, however, lies the same strategy: to create a strong emotional connection, gain the victim's trust, and then exploit them.

How do these scams work?

  1. An initial flattering and seemingly authentic contact

The scammer starts with an unexpected message, often very flattering. They use attractive photos – almost always stolen – and build a credible profile that inspires confidence: a prestigious profession, a stable life, reassuring personality traits.

In the case of fake celebrity accounts, fraudsters first identify people who are active in fan communities. They observe their interactions and identify who seems most receptive. They then contact their targets via profiles that closely resemble the official accounts: professional photo, copied biography, almost identical name. However, a quick check often reveals clues: recently created account, few posts, few followers or a disproportionate number of followers.

  1. A relationship that intensifies very quickly

Once initial contact has been made, the relationship accelerates. Compliments multiply and a feeling of exclusivity sets in. Fraudsters use expressions such as: ‘You're different from the others’, ‘I can trust you’, ‘Keep our relationship secret’.

The goal is clear: to create emotional dependence and distance the victim from their friends and family, who might spot the scam.

  1. The inability to meet or make a video call

This is one of the most reliable signs of a romance scam. Fraudsters always refuse to meet or make video calls. They come up with various excuses: distance, broken camera, work commitments, poor network connection, confidentiality related to their job, etc. In the case of celebrities, these excuses seem credible, but the reality is simple: the scammer cannot show their true face.

  1. Requests for money or sensitive data

The scam reaches its goal when enough trust has been established to ask for help. The excuses vary: an accident, a legal problem, travel expenses, stolen documents, a medical emergency. The request is always urgent and must remain discreet.

How can you protect yourself?

  • Be vigilant: before engaging in an intimate online conversation, it is useful to examine the profile in detail: the date the account was created, the consistency of photos and posts, the type of followers. A reverse image search (via Google Lens, for example) can help detect a stolen photo.
  • Be cautious about unexpected private messages. A celebrity or a serious stranger does not start a secret relationship in a matter of hours. And, regardless of the context, you should never share personal information, bank details or intimate images.
  • Report the suspicious account on the platform concerned.
  • Inform those around you: scammers often target young, isolated or emotionally vulnerable people.

How can you help a loved one who is already caught up in the scam?

  • Remove their sense of guilt: victims may be deeply convinced that the relationship is real. Shame or fear of judgement often prevents them from seeking help. A caring approach is essential. Reminding them that these fraudsters are experienced manipulators can sometimes help to remove their sense of guilt.
  • Analysing the situation together can help to highlight inconsistencies: vague language, refusal to show their face, repeated requests for money, total lack of proof of real identity.
  • Cut off all contact: once the victim recognises the signs, it becomes easier to cut off contact with the fraudster. It is crucial to do this quickly, as any further communication will strengthen their hold. Be aware that the scammer will inevitably try to isolate the victim as soon as they sense suspicion from those around them.
  • Keep evidence: screenshots, messages, account usernames. These will be useful when filing a complaint with the police. Encouraging this step is important, both for the victim and to prevent further abuse.
