Windows 10 updates will soon stop: how can you remain safe on the internet?

A lot of laptops and computers in Belgium are still running Windows 10. On 14 October 2025 Microsoft will stop sending security updates for Windows 10.

Your computer will still work after that time but you will no longer receive security updates. This leaves you vulnerable online to viruses, hackers and other cyberattacks.

Why is that a problem?

A computer without updates is easier to hack. If your computer becomes infected, it can not only compromise your personal data, but also infect your colleagues, friends and family via emails or your social networks.

How do I know which version of Windows I am using?

You can find out which version you have in the Windows specifications. You can use one of the following methods to find your Windows version and edition:

  1. In the Settings app on your Windows device, select System > About
  2. Type ‘Info’ in the search bar and open ‘About your system’

Can I upgrade to Windows 11?

That depends on your computer. Check if you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free by clicking the Start button. Go to Settings > Security and update > Windows Update. Check if there is a notification that you can update to Windows 11. If there is no notification, it means that you cannot update.

Do I need to buy a new computer?

Some older devices cannot simply update to Windows 11, the latest system. For many people, this means they will need a new computer.

How many computers are affected in the United Kingdom?

We do not know exactly how many devices are still running Windows 10 in the United Kingdom, but according to the latest figures, it is around 43% of Windows computers, including those in households, businesses and organisations (Source: Statcounter, June 2025).

Is there another solution?

Microsoft offers a temporary solution with the Extended Security Updates (ESU) Programme. This allows you to continue receiving security updates for Windows 10 for a limited time for a fee. This can be useful to buy some time, but it is not a permanent solution.

How can I stay safe?

  • Check which version of Windows you have and update to Windows 11. If an update is not possible, consider purchasing a new computer.
  • Perform regular updates, both for your operating system and for your programmes and apps.
  • Stay informed via the safeonweb app. This will keep you up to date with the most common forms of online fraud.

Beware of scammers

Be wary of suspicious emails or websites offering to install Windows 11. The upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 always takes place via your computer's settings. You never need to download a separate programme or pay anyone to perform an upgrade. Scammers often use these kinds of false promises to spread viruses or malware.
