Beware of phishing emails that lure you to a fake helpdesk

Phishing emails are currently circulating in which scammers warn of a supposedly suspicious transaction. The message states that you must urgently contact a helpdesk via a telephone number provided in the email.

Do not do this. The phone number does not lead to a genuine customer service team, but to fraudsters posing as helpdesk staff. They will try to gain your trust and may ask you for personal details, codes, bank details or access to your device.

How can you spot this scam?

Be extra careful if you receive an unexpected email that:

  • warns of a suspicious or blocked payment;
  • pressures you to call immediately;
  • contains a phone number you must use to cancel the transaction;
  • asks for codes, passwords, bank details or access to your computer or smartphone;
  • says you must act quickly to avoid damage.

A genuine bank, payment service or government agency will never ask you to call an unknown phone number via an unexpected email and then provide codes or passwords.

What should you do?

Do not call the phone number in the email.

Never disclose your PIN, itsme code, card reader details, passwords or security codes.

Do you want to check if there really is a problem? Then contact your bank or the organisation concerned yourself via the official website or app. Never use the contact details from the suspicious message.

Forward the suspicious email to suspicious@safeonweb.be and then delete the message.
