5 essential tips for staying safe online

To mark Safer Internet Day, Safeonweb reminds us of some essential rules for staying safe online. Cybercrime, scams and online manipulation are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but simple habits can greatly reduce the risks. Here are 5 basic tips to adopt on a daily basis.

1. Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication

Your password is the first line of defence for your online accounts. It should be long, unique and difficult to guess. Avoid common words, birth dates or personal information. Using a password manager can help you create and store complex passwords without having to memorise them.

In addition, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible. This extra layer of protection requires a second form of identification (a code via an app, SMS or fingerprint). Even if a cybercriminal obtains your password, they will not be able to access your account without this second step.

2. Stay alert to phishing

Phishing remains one of the most commonly used techniques by cybercriminals. Through email, text message or social media, they pose as banks, public services, well-known companies or colleagues to trick you into clicking on a link or providing personal information.

Phishing messages often play on urgency or fear: blocked account, missing payment, security issue. Before clicking, always check the sender, the link address and the content of the message. If in doubt, do not click and contact the organisation directly via its official website.

3. Beware of investment fraud

Investment scams promise quick, high returns with no risk. Cryptocurrencies, online trading or ‘exclusive’ investments are often promoted using fake testimonials, rigged graphs or images of celebrities.

A simple principle: if it seems too good to be true, it's probably a scam. Never make decisions under pressure, and never transfer money without verification. If in doubt, take the investment fraud test.

4. Beware of fraudulent online shops

Fraudulent online shops are on the rise, especially on social media. They offer popular products at extremely low prices, but the items are never delivered or are of very poor quality.

Before buying, take the time to check the website: correct URL, legal notices, return policy, contact details and reviews from other customers. Choose payment methods that offer buyer protection.

5. Don't believe everything you see online

With the development of deepfakes, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is fake. Images, videos, and voice messages can be generated or manipulated to deceive, influence, or defraud.

A familiar face in a video or a familiar voice are no longer guarantees of authenticity. Take a step back from tempting offers, check the sources, and cross-check the information before reacting. Caution and critical thinking remain your best allies.
