Toys with AI: fun, but be aware of the risks

More and more toys are using artificial intelligence (AI). This may seem harmless and modern, but it can pose risks to the privacy and safety of children and adults.

What do we mean by AI toys?

AI toys are toys that, like “smart” toys, are connected to Wi-Fi. Examples include talking dolls, robots that give answers, or apps that are connected to the toys. They use a microphone to understand children's questions and Large Language Model technology such as OpenAI GPT to formulate answers. This allows children to receive answers to their questions in real time.

These toys are available in Belgium and will certainly be under our Christmas trees this year. AI toys can be educational and fun, but it is important to be aware of the risks.

What are the risks associated with these toys?

Some AI toys listen constantly in order to respond. This allows them to:

  • record conversations in the home,
  • collect personal information such as names, addresses or habits, but also recognise your child's voice and face.

You don't always know how long this data is stored or who can see it.

Unsecure connections are a risk

Many smart toys use an app, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. If these connections are poorly secured,

  • hackers can listen in or watch,
  • and strangers can control the toys remotely.

AI sometimes gives incorrect or inappropriate answers

AI systems are not perfect. They can:

  • make mistakes in their answers (hallucinate),
  • give inappropriate or confusing responses,
  • influence children or give them incorrect information.

Children often do not realise that the answers are sometimes made up.

Children trust AI toys too quickly

Children often see AI toys as friends. As a result:

  • they are more likely to share personal information,
  • they talk spontaneously about their feelings, problems or private lives,
  • they do not realise that their words are being stored or processed.

How can you protect yourself and your children?

  • Read the privacy settings of the toy and the app and restrict access where possible (e.g. location tracking).
  • Turn off microphones and cameras when possible and turn off the toy when not in use.
  • Install updates when they become available.
  • Make sure your Wi-Fi network is secured with a password.
  • Do not let children play with AI toys alone.
  • Look for the CE mark and choose reliable manufacturers.
