2020 was a year of many setbacks. Cybercriminals and fraudsters did not show any mercy either. They took advantage of the situation and targeted people working from home, online shoppers and internet users who are just a bit too gullible. With these 5 simple tips, you will be able to outsmart them. Remember: you are the best line of defence!
1. Think twice before clicking a link
Cybercriminals also make resolutions. No doubt they want to make even more money and find new victims in 2021. They do so mainly by bombarding you with fake messages or phishing. They place links in those messages. They want nothing more than for you to click on those links, because they will take you to a fake website where they will find out your details or even steal money from your bank account.
So don't click on links in messages, but forward those messages to suspicious@safeonweb.be. We can then have the links to the fake website blocked.
You can find more information about phishing here.
2. Use two-factor authentication
Using a strong password is good, but using two-step verification is 100 times better. Two-factor authentication keeps unwanted guests out of your account, even if they know your password. Two-step verification or two-factor authentication (2FA) is a simple solution to better protect your accounts. Use it whenever possible. It's simple and safe.
More information about two-step verification can be found here.
3. Use a password manager
Do you want a very good new year's resolution for 2021 ? Then install a password manager. This manager keeps all your accounts and their corresponding passwords safe. The password manager itself should be secured using a strong password. That way, you only have to remember one password. Simple and safe.
You can find more information about a password manager here.
4. Perform regular updates
In 2021, you can prevent cybercriminals from gaining access to your device or your data by running regular security updates, both for your operating system and for your programs and apps. Shut down your devices every day. After all, updates are usually performed automatically at startup.
More information about making updates can be found here.
5. Enjoy the internet, but don't be naive
You are the best line of defence! Always be wary if you get an email, phone call or text message that you don't immediately expect. Is the offer too good or are you entitled to a bonus? Are you pressured into making a decision or payment quickly? Did you receive a request from a family member or friend in need out of the blue? Or are you contacted by someone offering unsolicited help for a computer problem you didn't even know you had? Don't get caught out. Very often these people are fraudsters.
We wish you a cyber-safe 2021
