Online fraud: raise the alarm, prevent the harm

Talking about online fraud remains difficult for many Belgians. According to a recent Febelfin survey, 64% of victims feel ashamed—a figure significantly higher than for other crimes such as burglary. As a result, experiences are rarely shared, which limits awareness and gives fraudsters more room to operate.

Young people particularly affected

The study highlights a paradox among 16- to 30-year-olds: they are both more likely to underestimate the risk of fraud and more reluctant to talk about it. This combination makes them particularly vulnerable. By remaining silent, they also fail to alert those around them.

Breaking the silence: a key lever

Yet a large majority of Belgians recognize the importance of speaking out. Between 78% and 84% believe that sharing one’s experience or reporting fraud helps protect us all better. Talking about online fraud helps identify scams more quickly and make more informed choices on the internet.

A campaign inspired by nature

With its new campaign “Online Fraud: Break the Silence, Share Your Experience,” Febelfin aims to lift this taboo. The concept is inspired by a well-known instinct in nature: when a bird detects danger, it alerts others by crying out. Translated to the digital world, the message is simple: sharing your experience protects others.

Disseminated primarily on social media and through public service announcements, the campaign encourages everyone to speak openly about attempted or actual cases of fraud. The more testimonials circulate, the harder it becomes for fraudsters to trap new victims.
