Last week, we received around a hundred fake messages forwarded to us from a scammer posing as a lawyer. The message claims that you may be entitled to compensation as a victim of online fraud. The sender then asks for sensitive personal data, such as a copy of your ID card, your address and details of the losses you have suffered.
This message is suspicious because it comes from an inappropriate email address, because it asks for personal documents, and because the sender is posing as an official or legal authority without credible verification.

Have you been scammed?
- If you have lost money or are being extorted, we recommend that you file a report with your local police straight away.
- Contact your bank and/or Card Stop on 078 170 170 (+32 78 170 170 from abroad) if you have passed on bank details, money is disappearing from your bank account or if you have transferred money to a scammer. In this way, any fraudulent transactions can be blocked.
