Social media are targeted by hackers who hide their malware on them. A few examples:
Hackers are constantly using new methods. Yet, social media continues to be popular because it can be used to install malware, for example. "Let’s start with the software that automatically posts messages to your profile. All kinds of topics which, for example, are linked to events such as a natural disaster or funny images or movies intended to arouse your curiosity or attract your attention. Your friends will think you posted the message and will click on it without suspicion", explains Chief of Police Olivier Bogaert. Hackers therefore benefit from the group effect. If you are faced with this phenomenon, be sure to post a warning message on your account.
Hackers can also use Facebook Messenger. The message may look like a warning coming from the social media platform. "The message warns you about a threat and urges you to update your account. The link takes you to a page where you have to log in again. This is how hackers get your login and password."
Not too many details...
Another method hackers use to try to trap you is to invite you to discover a game or application. "This invitation may come from a virus installed on the profile of one of your friends. Inform your friend so that they can use an antivirus program to thoroughly scan their computer or smartphone. In any case, we recommend that you do this on a regular basis", warns the Chief of Police.
If you want to stay out of harm’s way, it’s best not to put too much information on your profile. "Don't mention your phone number or the schools you've been to. Do not share any information about your travel dates and destinations, nor about any recent purchases", concludes Olivier Bogaert.
