Eye for each other. Together, we can prevent smartphone theft. But how do I secure my smartphone just in case?

The FPS Home Affairs is launching an awareness campaign against pickpockets.

At the end of the year, opportunities for pickpockets abound. Be wary at Christmas markets, on public transport and in busy shopping malls.

By the way, do you know how to properly secure your smartphone if it is ever lost or stolen?

1. Strengthen your codes and passwords
  • PIN SIM card: Choose a strong PIN and avoid overly obvious combinations such as 0000, 1111 or 1234. Also avoid using personal information such as your date of birth or other existing PINs (e.g. eID, bank card).
  • Passwords and numeric codes: Use complex passwords instead of simple patterns. Patterns can sometimes be visible on the screen, compromising the security of your device.
2. Activate automatic locking

Set your smartphone to lock automatically after a period of inactivity (ideally after up to a minute). This increases protection in case of loss or theft.

3. Secure your data in case of unauthorised access

Temporary lock: Install a temporary lock feature after a number of failed attempts to access your device. Also ensure automatic deletion of data after an excessive number of failed attempts. Always make sure you have updated backups.

4. Keep control of your devices

Never leave your devices unattended, especially in public places. Keep your devices out of sight, at home or when travelling. Watch out for pickpockets in crowded places.
