Significant increase in the number of cases of internet banking fraud in the first quarter of 2018
1,361 cases of fraud via internet banking were reported in the first quarter of 2018. Almost all of those cases were the result of phishing, a method whereby fraudsters "fish" for consumers’ banking codes in order to steal money from their account. The figure is about 60% higher than in the first quarter of 2017. The amounts misappropriated even increased by about 215%.
Febelfin is warning citizens to never disclose their banking codes via e-mail, telephone or social media to protect themselves against phishing attempts.
Febelfin is also warning young people to never lend out their bank cards. Doing so puts them at risk of becoming money mules and serving as intermediaries for channeling stolen money.
Febelfin also pointed out that the Belgian financial sector is continuously investing in ensuring the security of payment traffic and stopping phishing. For example, the financial institutions have implemented systems to detect phishing attempts in time and block phishing websites as soon as they become aware of their existence.
